Most people want to work in a healthy environment. What does a healthy work environment consist of? Environmental health consists of preventing or controlling disease, injury, and disability related to the interactions between people and their environment.1 So many things affect us every day, especially physical health in the workplace such as nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, breastfeeding, and diabetes. A worksite wellness program can be used to improve employees’ health around these areas and more.
According to the CDC the goal of wellness in the workplace is to make healthy living for all Americans easier. It is also to reduce complications from multiple chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Evidence has shown that health and wellness programs in a professional work environment has helped with improved social qualities, established healthy behaviors, improved employee’s education concerning what to get tested for and what is best for them. Poor health of employees is in sync with a 51% decrease in productivity day by day. A consensus from the CDC said, “Maintaining a healthy workforce can lower direct costs, such as absenteeism and worker productivity, worksite wellness programs can make it easier for employees to make voluntary behavior changes that improve health.”2
